The first book to illustrate fully and describe the life stages of all the British species; now the ‘classic’ twentieth century work on British lepidoptera with probably the finest paintings on this subject ever executed.

F W FROHAWK, VARIETIES OF BRITISH BUTTERFLIES, 1938, original first edtion, 199 pages including 48 colour plates, (illustrations include specimens of aberrations, gynandromorphs, albinism and melanism), good copy, Frohawk’s final book. The plates of the first edition printing were lost during the Second World War and a reprint issued later. Very few copies of the first edition exist. It is easily identified - on the frontispiece opposite the title-page under the figures of the Purple Emperor the caption word \\\"Ex\\\" appears at the end of the first line, but in the reprint the word is at the beginning of the second line. The plates are printed on better quality, less fibrous, paper and the weave of the cloth binding is coarser. Ward Lock & Co.
